Alfredo Maestro is one of those new winemakers brave and bold, with no family tradition that decides to enter into this world of wine so complicated. I was lucky to asist a tasting in a very well known enotheque in Madrid where he was presenting his wines. And it occurred to me what has happened so many times, that I find somebody with a completely different and original speech.
Alfredo is an autodidact who began to read and learn all you could do with wines in order to leave your foot print as a winemaker. There was a time in which he realized he did not want to go on this way. He wanted the wines express by themselves the type of grape that they were coming from, the type of earth where the vine was planted, its location. Alfredo is adding every year new vineyards that he finds interesting. From each vineyard he gets a different wine, and at present he ellaborates already 15. He has vineyards in many different places, in Peñafiel, Navalcarnero, Avila, etc.
One day he was told he was a natural wine maker. Oh! That’s good he said. I did not know anything about it.
To listen to him on this tasting was really pleasant. Drink his wines was even better. But It could have been better if I had not to leave the tasting for imperative reasons before the ending.
But on July 26 we will be with Alfredo listening to him on the best place to listen to him, in the middle of his vineyard. Because good wines are not made in the winery, but in the vineyard. We have a lot of expectatives on this tour.
After having been with Alfredo we will move to Segovia to a place where you can see maybe the best sunset of all Castilla León. The best sunbset? That could be a great debate. Some people consider the best sunset of Segovia is on its roman aqueduct. I agree it is a very good place but we prefer to be in Zamarramala, where you can overlook the whole city. We have been there 2 months ago. And I will never forget the experience. I will be glad to share it with you.
Segovia is besides just in the middle of the way back from the winery to Madrid and when we get moving back to Madrid there will be only left one hour travel that I expect will become very pleasant after all these experiences.
